On Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, God called his son, Mr. John Rhodes Jr., from labor to reward.
John was born on Sept. 28, 1937, and grew up in Belcross (Camden), N.C. He was the son of the late John and Mary Ann Rhodes.
John was raised to love and reverence God, and in his early years he became a member of New Sawyers Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Belcross.
He was educated at Belcross Elementary School and Marion Anderson High School. Right after he graduated from high school in 1955, John went into the United States Army. After serving a couple of years on active duty, John was assigned to the Army Reserves until his honorable discharge in 1961.
After his discharge from the Army, John moved to Bronx, N.Y., where he worked for a while with the United States Postal Service. He soon realized that his passion was to become a business owner and ventured and remained in the world of entrepreneurship.
John soon met and married the love of this life, the late Fannie Virginia Robinson Rhodes. While in New York, he attended Macedonia Baptist Church in Manhattan until he relocated to Petersburg, Va.
John leaves to cherish his wonderful memories two sons, Douglas Howard Sr. (Miriam) of Allentown, Pa., and John Rhodes III (Elwanda) of Raleigh, N.C.; one daughter, Robyn Rhodes (Rob) of Bronx, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Jennifer Howard and Douglas Howard Jr., both of Allentown, Pa.; one great-granddaughter, Neesa Aliza Howard of Allentown, Pa.; one devoted sister, Vivian Hunter of Elizabeth City, N.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, amongst them, Lincoln and Shirley Spence of Elizabeth City, N.C., and friends.
A funeral service for Mr. John Rhodes Jr. will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 418 Halifax St., Petersburg, Va.; the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Diggs Sr., pastor, eulogist. The interment to follow at Southlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at the funeral establishment.
