Mr. Kelsir Byrd was born in Baltimore on April 25, 1926, the elder of two sons, to the late Blanche Byrd. At a very early age, he came to Wakefield where he spent most of his life. He received his informal education in the public schools of Sussex County and graduated from the Sussex County Training School of Waverly. He was inducted into the U.S. Army
during World War II, December 1944 and was honorably discharged October 1946. In September 1947, he entered A&T State College/University and graduated May 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in Social Studies.
Mr. Byrd returned to Baltimore, his birthplace, in 1951 and was employed with the U.S. government, working as a physical science technician with U.S. Customs for 10 years. In 1961, Kelsir returned to Wakefield and began his teaching career in Sussex County public schools, where he taught for 27 years and retired in 1988.
His only brother, Marshall S. Byrd, of Baltimore, predeceased him.
He leaves to cherish his memories: one niece, Tonya M. Byrd; one grand-niece, Kavette Smith; one grand-nephew, Kelvin Smith, all of Baltimore; also cherishing his memories and deeply devoted are nephew/niece, Robert L. Flowers Jr. (Bobby) and Maggie Inez. Mr. Byrd cherished his loyal friends.
Funeral service for Mr. Byrd will be Saturday, April 27, 2013, at 1 p.m. at the Peace-Bland Chapel, Waverly, the Rev. Bobby Ricks Sr., officiating. Interment to follow in the Booker T. Memorial Park, Wakefield.
