Ms. Peggy L. Tyler, also known as "Whop" or "Lucy," 40, of 2307 Freeman St., Hopewell, suddenly entered into eternal rest at John Randolph Medical Center, Hopewell, in order to join her Heavenly Father on Thursday, May 2, 2013.
She was born on June 1, 1972, to David Pettaway and Frances Tyler Johnson. Peggy accepted Christ at an early age. She was preceded in death by: her mother, Frances Johnson; grandparents, Lizzie and Jake Tyler, and Rose Alice and Emmauel Pettaway.
Peggy was a 1990 graduate of Hopewell High School where she had an athletic affection for track & field and girl's basketball. She was a former employee of Econo Foods in Fort Lee until her health started to decline.
Peggy was a loving and devoted mother, daughter, sister and friend who gave encouragement and was always willing to give a helping hand to anyone that crossed her path. Peggy became a "go to mom/second mom" for many youth within her neighborhood. She was truly a kind person.
Peggy was considered one of the biggest fans of Hopewell basketball as she sat in the stands cheering them on even when she wasn't in the best of health. She developed a strong love and compassion for playing cards and bingo.
She leaves behind her memories: her fathers, David Pettaway and (devoted) Emmette Johnson; two devoted children, Yasmin B. Tyler and Darrell Taylor Jr.; a devoted sister, Annette Pearl Walker (Bobby). She also leaves behind: three stepsisters, Nicole Green, Andrea Berry, and Michelle Walker; four stepbrothers, Phil, Steve, Corey and Golden Brown; a godsister, Dakiah Edmonds; one goddaughter, Kionna Jones; and a godson, Juacoby Street; a godniece, Iauhna "Nana" Tyler (who she really loved and enjoyed being around); two devoted nephews that she loved as her own, Terral "Nelski" Tyler, and Terrance "Duke" Tyler; one niece, Destiny Green; aunts, Louise Allen, Mary Sue Pettaway, Marilyn Taylor, Geraldine Wooden, Martha Basknight, Jennie Pettaway, Deloris May (William), and Clarine Monroe; uncles, (devoted) Robert Pettaway (Ruth), (devoted) Jacob Tyler, Sidney Tyler Sr. (Lucy), Randolph Pettaway (Gail), Emmanuel Pettaway (Fannie), Samuel and Coston Pettaway; devoted caregivers, Charles Pettaway (who she loved as a brother that stuck with her from beginning to end), Sandra Stith and Sharesa Dunston, and a host of loving and devoted great aunts, great uncles, cousins, friends and VFW
Club Members too numerous to name.
Peggy will be truly missed by many.
A funeral service for Ms. Peggy L. Tyler will be held at 12 p.m., Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at the Chapel of J. M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment Inc., 102 South Ave., Petersburg, the Rev. Damion T. Batts, eulogist. The interment will follow at Mt. Sinai Cemetery.
