On Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, our beloved Mr. Roy E. Coles, "Blue Eagle," of 25705 Weakley Road (Piney Beach), was called home to be with the Lord.
He was born on July 31, 1943, in Church Road, Va., to the late James Edward Coles and Rosa Mae Coles, and was the third child of 12 children. Roy was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Coles.
Roy was known by many people throughout Dinwiddie. He was an avid fan of the D.C. Giants baseball team the Virginia Commonwealth Baseball League, where he also worked as umpire for the league games. Roy was employed mostly throughout his life as a truck driver for R.O. Mayes and Sons Grain Co. He was also employed by Maitland Brothers, Britt Trucking and Ingram Construction. Roy was also a volunteer fireman
with the Namozine Volunteer Fire Department for 10 years, the manager of the band Fire and a very devoted member of Club Char-Les Manze of Petersburg.
Left to cherish his precious memory are: his wife of 45 years, Veronica Elaine Coles; son, Brandon Dion Coles Sr. (Theresa"Rita"); four grandchildren, Dionca, Taneisha, Brandon Jr. and Terrell Coles; one great-grandson, Xavier Coles; seven brothers, James, Joseph, Daniel, Linwood (Janette), Randolph, Robert (Linda) and Charles Coles; three sisters, Pearlie, Ruth and Sheila (Ronnie) Coles; sister-in-law, Maxine Coles; two brothers-in-law, Roger and Howard Batts; a devoted mother-in-law, Carrie Batts; a host of nieces, among them devoted, Shaniece Coles, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and friends, among them devoted, Claude Simmons, Keon Brown, the members of Club Char-Les-Manze and the staff of the Golden Living Nursing Center, Petersburg.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, at the chapel of William N. Bland & Son Funeral Home, Petersburg. Bishop Kippy Lundy will officiate. Interment will follow in Dinwiddie Memorial Park, Dinwiddie.
