The Rev. Dr. Roy L. Briggs, 71, of Petersburg, Va., passed away on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, Va.
Born on April 17, 1942, to the late Andrew "Jake" and Lula Briggs, Dr. Briggs was preceded in death by his sisters, Shirley M. Smith, Vernell "Boo" Williams and Catherine "Rena" Lofton, and his brothers, Harold Jackson, James Johnson and Bernard "Nitty" Jackson.
Upon graduation from Peabody High School Class of 1960, he served in the United States Navy
for six years, where he began a relationship with the Navigators International Interdenominational Missionary Organization whose main focus is to reach and teach Jesus Christ. He ministered to servicemen while in Okinawa, Japan and in the United States. After being discharged from the Navy he continued with the Navigators while pursuing his education. He settled in Oakland, Calif., and married the late Anecita Fernandez. He started a successful printing business and was the founder and pastor of the Berea Missionary Baptist Church in Oakland. Dr. Briggs was also an educator and administrator in the Oakland Unified School District for 20 years.
Dr. Briggs is survived by his wife, Amanda Robinson Briggs; two sons, Martin A. Briggs (Kayla) of Birmingham, Ala., and Stuart D. Briggs of Oakland, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Cornelia K. Robinson and one stepgrandson, Farhard A. El-Amin Jr., both of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Ethel Mae Glenn of Petersburg, Va.; two brothers, William "Sonny" Jackson Sr. (Mary) of Petersburg, Va., and Andrew M. Briggs (Cherry) of Chester, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
The family is grateful for the services of the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, Va., the medical staff at Southside Regional Medical Center, the SRMC Annex Hemodialysis Unit of Petersburg and GENTIVA Hospice of Colonial Heights, Va.
Services for the Rev. Dr. Roy Lee Briggs will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Unity Baptist Church, 330 S. South St., Petersburg; theRev. Dr. E.E. Mitchell, pastor, eulogist. Interment to follow at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery.
A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at the funeral establishment.
