Miss Ruby Granby Hayes, 89, of Petersburg, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, July 31, 2013.
She is the daughter of the late Mr. Ruby Hayes and Emmaline Benton Hayes, born in Braddock, Pa., Feb. 6, 1924. Upon their demise, Ruby became the adopted daughter of the late Miss Jessie Granby Benton.
Miss Hayes resided several years in Trenton, N.J., and was an active member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church. When she moved to Ettrick, she joined Zion Baptist Church. She was affiliated with J.B. Brown Memorial Choir, Finance Committee of Zion Baptist Church and a member of the Richmond-Petersburg Chapter NCCU.
She completed her public school education in New Jersey and upon graduation, attended North Caroline College for Negroes (now NCCU), receiving a bachelor of science in commerce. She also received her master of business administration from the Graduate School of Business Administration, New York University
She was employed as a secretary at Lincoln Academy, Kings Mountain, N.C., and with Esso Standard Oil Co. Miss Hayes was also, an instructor at the Harlem Branch YWCA. She later joined the staff of Spellman College, Atlanta, as assistant registrar. While employed at Virginia State College (now VSU), she was acting chairman of the Business Education Department, Division of Field Services, with Dr. Sam A. Madden, and appointed instructor and assistant professor of the Department of Accounting and Finance. Upon retirement, she was designated professor emeritus, Department of Accounting.
She leaves to cherish her memory two cousins, Mrs. Beatrice Hines and Dr. Frances E. Grant, both of Philadelphia; affection of two godchildren, Dr. Arnold T. Bell of Tallahassee, Fla., and Mr. Steven Savage of Tenton, N.J.; as well as a host of extended family in Hillsborough, N.C., and Petersburg.
A funeral service will be held noon Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at the chapel of William N. Bland & Son Funeral Home, 137 Harrison St., Petersburg. The Rev. Dr. Andrew White will officiate. Interment will follow at Blandford Cemetery. Family and friends will assemble at 11:30 a.m. at the chapel prior to the day of service.
