Shelia D. Cox

Ms. Shelia Diane Cox of 4815 Olgers Road, Sutherland, entered eternal rest on Sunday, March 17, 2013, at her residence. She was born July 23, 1951, to Vergie Talley Cox and Beverly Leonard Cox.

A graduate of the Dinwiddie County Public School System, she received her Bachelor's of Science degree in Social Work from Virginia State College (University).

Shelia joined and was baptized at the Rocky Branch Church, Sutherland, and remained a faithful and dedicated member until her health declined. She was a member of the Voices of Rocky Branch Baptist Church Choir, Missionary Ministry, Ushers Ministry and the Hospitality Ministry. Shelia loved the Lord and she loved her church family. We always looked forward to Shelia's rendition of our church history for the church anniversaries.

Shelia was employed at the Children's Home of the Virginia Baptist for over 25 years. She also worked at Southside Virginia Training Center before retiring due to her declining heath.

Words cannot begin to describe the person of our own Grand District Deputy Organizer, Shelia Cox. She was a member of Sunbeam Poplar Grove Chapter #130 Order of Eastern Stars P.H.A. where she served as Past Matron and current Treasurer. Shelia was appointed to a grand office by the late Past Grand Worthy Matron Dorothy Roberts. She served as Flag Bearer and on the Past Matrons Council before being appointed to serve as Grand District Deputy Organizer for the 16th District.

Shelia was preceded in death by her father, Beverly Leonard Cox; sister, Joyce C. Smith, and two brothers, Leonard and James "Moses" Cox.

She leaves to cherish loving memories, her mother, Vergie T. Cox of the home; two nieces, Tara Bonner (Kenneth) of Sutherland, and Tonya Gholson (James) of Woodbridge, Va.; three great-nieces, Kourtney Bonner of Sutherland, Michayla Cox-Smith and Jamarya Gholson, both of Woodbridge, Va.; two great-nephews, Klayton and Kenneth R. Bonner, both of Sutherland; a sister-in-law, Mary Cox of Petersburg; one brother-in-law, Phillip Smith of Sutherland; two aunts, Susie Bell Davis of East Orange, N.J. and Everline Ricks (Lorenza) of Rockville, Md.; one uncle, Floyd Talley of Sutherland; a host of cousins, friends and neighbors, one devoted and loving cousin, Bertha Jackson of Petersburg; other devoted and supportive friends, Gladys Walker, Bertha Pryor, Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Herbert Anderson and a very special and caring in-house nurse, Debi Mallahan.

A funeral service will be held 12 p.m., Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Rocky Branch Baptist Church, 6609 Rocky Branch Road, Sutherland, the Rev. Lynn G. Robinson, pastor, eulogist, and Rev. Dr. Herbert W. Anderson, pastor of Sharon Baptist Church, officiating.

The interment to follow at the Cox Family Cemetery, Route 460 East (Cox Road) Sutherland. The family will receive friends at 4815 Olgers Road, Sutherland, and may be contacted by calling, 804-733-0388.
