SHERMAN M. BROWN SR.

Mr. Sherman McKinley Brown Sr. affectionately known as "Gate Mouth," of 1120 Patterson St., Petersburg, Va., entered eternal rest on Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, Va.

He was born August 6, 1949, to Mr. and Mrs. Arby Brown Sr. Sherman joined Good Shepherd Baptist Church at an early age.

Sherman was an avid Washington Redskins fan. Sherman was a very disappointed fan whenever they would lose a game, often saying, "I've got to go with another team if they don't do better." Sherman also enjoyed watching action movies and videos of the Temptations and Jerry Butler with his wife. He played football in high school, the position of tight end. He was a former United States Marine, serving in the Vietnam War.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arby Brown Sr. and Esther Brown. and his siblings, Isaphine Smith, Florence Brown, Charles Brown, Raymond Threatt and Eloise Wade.

Sherman leaves to cherish his memories a devoted wife of 43 years, Janet "Cookie" Brown, whom he loved dearly; two sons, Corey Brown (Cathy) of Petersburg, Va., and Sherman Brown Jr. (Monica) of Dallas, Ga.; two daughters, Mendy Brown of Petersburg, Va., and Renee Jones (Robert) of Chesterfield, Va.; five grandchildren, Markeese, Corey Jr., Sherman Jr., Marrica and Rockel; three sisters, Christine Parson, Rosa Lee Williams and Florine Brown, all of Petersburg, Va.; three brothers, Robert Brown (Yvonne), John Henry Brown and Arby Brown Jr., all of Petersburg, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Arnita Jones (Willie) and Marguerita Jones, both of Petersburg, Va.; three brothers-in-law, Edward Jones (Brenda), Herman Jones (Carolyn) and Clarence Jones; devoted friends, Thomas Whitaker, Clint Bufford, Leon Smith and Robert Thomas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Services for Mr. Sherman M. Brown Sr. will be held noon Thursday, June 12, 2014, at Good Shepherd Baptist Church, 2223 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, Va.; the Rev. Jeffrey L. Reaves Sr., pastor. Interment to follow at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery.
