Shirley P. Thomas, of 1038 Magnolia St., Petersburg, Va., departed this life on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at her residence. A native of Petersburg, Va., she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Annie B. Penny.

She was a member of Zion Apostolic Christian Memorial Temple. Miss Thomas was a faithful member of the Sunday School, prayer warrior and Bible study.

She retired after 25 years of dedicated service from Central State Hospital as a licensed practical nurse.

Left to cherish her memories are her two devoted sons. Robert C. Thomas of Petersburg, Va., and Tony R. Thomas both of Killeen, Texas; two devoted sisters, Alonia P. Smith and Paulean P. Silvers, both of Petersburg, Va.; a devoted daughter-in-law, Teresa F. Thomas of Killeen, Texas; grandchildren, Terry Thomas of Jacksonville, Fla., Peola Thomas of Petersburg, Va., Trey King of Cookville, Tenn., Antonio King of Dallas, Teyonda Thomas of Petersburg, Va., Gloria Kinlaw of Killeen, Texas, and William Oglsby of Savannah, Ga.; great-grandchildren, Domynic Thomas Forman of Savannah, Ga., Kobe Singleton of Petersburg, Va., Nybella Simone Thomas of Jacksonville, Fla., Kalea Lighty of Killeen, Texas, Paris King of Austin, Texas, DaSawn King, Jaquay King and Racquel King of Cookville, Tenn.; two devoted nephews, James L. Smith (Lynn) of San Antonio and Demetrius Vinson of Petersburg, Va.; cousins, Mary E. Lewis and Ruby Miles, both of Petersburg, Va., Ethel Mason of Stony Creek, Va., Loretta Hurst of Petersburg, Va., Gloria Smith of New York City, Charles Neaves (Winnie) and Daisy Baug, both of Petersburg, Va., Juliana and Bobby Robinson of New York City, Walter George (Karen), Michael Lewis and Steve Miles, all of Petersburg, Va., and Olivia Mecullers of Apex, N.C.; a host of other cousins, relatives and friends, to include long-time devoted friend, Bessie F. Womack of Waco, Texas.

Mom, we were blessed to have a wonderful mother like you, with your kind heart and that beautiful smile of yours. You loved God, your church and your family.

You cared about everyone, and if someone needed your help, you never refused to aid them. We love you and will miss you, although we do know in a better place now, no more pain, and no more suffering. You touched many hearts, with your love, kindness and positive attitude, always willing to learn and better yourself.

A funeral service for Ms. Shirley Thomas will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at Zion Apostolic Christian Memorial Temple, 1601 Youngs Road, Petersburg, Va.; Bishop Samuel Wright, pastor, and Pastor Susie Wright, eulogist. Interment to follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park.
