Thomas E. Ampy

Our hearts were deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved, Mr. Thomas Earl Ampy of 23318 Williamson Road, Dinwiddie, Va.

Thomas was born Jan. 14, 1931, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Victoria Coleman and Roy Ampy. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Leroy Ampy and Everette Ampy.

Thomas was a hard-working man. He proudly served in the U.S. Army. He then worked numerous jobs during his lifetime. He owned a pug wood business, worked as a supervisor at Southside Virginia Training Center, and was employed at Dinwiddie Supermarket. After many years of dedicated service, he retired from his position as a custodian for Dr. Charles Ashby's Medical Office. He also retired from Dinwiddie Sanitation Department. He was also the founder of Ampy & Sons Scrap Metal Business, which he continued to work with until his recent illness.

He was a member of Gravel Run Baptist Church, Petersburg, Va. (Dinwiddie County), where he served as a deacon and a member of the Brotherhood Ministry.

Thomas is survived by his devoted wife, Kathleen Ampy of Dinwiddie, Va.; three daughters, Sylvia Fisher (Leo), Eleanora Ampy and Melody Coleman (James), all of Dinwiddie, Va., and Lottie Ampy of Chesterfield, Va.; three sons, Maurice Ampy of Dinwiddie, Va., Thomas Ampy (Annette) and Herman Ampy, both of Petersburg, Va., and Timothy Ampy (Wanda) of Chester, Va.; five grandchildren, Stephen Hill (Shawanna), Thomas and Taleah Ampy, Timothy Ampy Jr. and Laila Ampy-Thomas; two great-grandchildren, Shane and Shawn Hill; one brother, Herbert Ampy (Martha) of Buffalo, N.Y.; one sister, Gertrude Sain of Garfield Heights, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Shirley Ampy of New York and Annie Mae Ampy of Dinwiddie, Va., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, to include special friends, Lt. Col. (retired) Arthur Hobbs, Sheriff Duck Adams, Pastor Dr. Larry Brown Sr. and First Lady Cynthia Brown, Mack Ampy, Cookie Ampy, Dr. Charles Ashby, the Bank of Southside – Dinwiddie, Va., staff, Charles Rainey Pharmacist and staff of Dinwiddie Drug Store and Fatz Restaurant (coffee shop friends).

A funeral service for Mr. Thomas E. Ampy will be held at noon Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at Gravel Run Baptist Church, 12512 Duncan Road, Petersburg, Va., the Rev. Dr. Larry D. Brown Sr., pastor, eulogist. The interment will follow at The Ampy Family Cemetery, Dinwiddie, Va.

The family will also receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at the funeral establishment.
