Mrs. Verlean P. Sykes, 82, of Petersburg, formerly of Disputanta, Va., peacefully entered into eternal rest on Tuesday morning, March 25, 2014, at the John Randolph Medical Center.
She was born on March 30, 1931, in Disputanta, Va. to the late Chester and Eva Hill Parham. She received her early education in Disputanta, Va.
At an early age she confessed Christ and joined the Union Branch Baptist Church, Prince George, Va. She remained a faithful member until her health permitted her from doing so. There at her home church, she participated with the Missionary Ministry.
She spent most of her adult life in Petersburg, Va., and was married to the late James W. Sykes. She was a retired employee of Fort Lee Kenner Army Hospital, with many years of service. She also served with the Royal Aces, a former member of the Rolette Harper Tent #135 and a member of the Petersburg Triad Program.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Bessie Chambliss, John E. Parham, Ella Hyman, Joyce P. Williams and Edward Diggs.
She is survived by her loving nieces, Angela Williams of North Chesterfield, Shelia Lassiter (James) of Dinwiddie, Patricia Fitzgerald (Howard) and Gloria Parham, all of Petersburg, Eva Parham and Jenny Parham, both of Richmond; brother and sister-in-law, Bernice Sykes and Russell Sykes; a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends.
A homegoing service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday March 29, 2014, at the Union Branch Baptist Church, Prince George; the Rev. Marcus Allen, pastor. The Rev. Dr. Andrew J. White Sr. will eulogize. Burial will follow at the Southlawn Memorial Park. The family will assemble at the funeral home for the procession at 10:15 a.m. on the day of the service. Public viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Petersburg Chapel.
