Virginia W. and William T. Manson Jr.

The Reverend Dr. William Tally Manson Jr., 95, and his beloved wife of 71 years, Virginia Winfield Manson, 91, both of King's Grant, Martinsville, passed away within hours of one another on Friday, May 3, 2013.

Dr. Manson was born on June 30, 1917, in Warfield, son of the late Laura Faison Manson and William Tally Manson. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by: two sisters, Henrietta Manson Coiner, and Edith Manson Harrill.

He was pastor emeritus of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church of Martinsville and was a member of the Presbytery of the Peaks. He had previously served as associate pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, N.C.; pastor of McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church in Covington; Limestone Presbyterian Church in Gaffney, S.C.; Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church in Abingdon, and Forest Hills Presbyterian Church in Martinsville. After retirement, he served as interim and supply pastor for numerous churches in Virginia.

He also served as a chaplain with the U. S. Army Air Force during World War II and was very active in the Army Reserves as chaplain for 26 years. He retired with the rank of colonel.

Mrs. Manson was born on May 25, 1921, in Petersburg, daughter of the late Virginia Clare Ridenour Winfield and Robert Powhatan Winfield Sr. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Robert Powhatan Winfield Jr.

Her artistic aptitude found numerous and accomplished expressions with rug-hooking, knitting, china painting, flower arranging, and gardening. She was active for many years in her book club, in Presbyterian women's circles, and in YMCA water aerobics.

For several years she volunteered for the crisis hotline. She was a gracious and supportive partner in her husband's ministry.

Survivors include: two daughters, Clare Manson Willey and husband, Art of Flat Rock, N.C., and Martha Manson French and husband, Hugh of Canandaigua, N.Y.; son, William "Bill" Tally Manson III and wife Kathryn, of Anderson, S.C.; sister, Margaret "Peggy" Winfield Payne of Lexington, K.Y.; and four grandchildren, Adam Winfield French, William Taylor French, Katie Virginia Manson, and Charlotte Elaine Manson.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 19, 2013, at 3 p.m. at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, Martinsville, with the Rev. Bradley Long, officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Interment will be private at Concord Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Rawlings.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, 725 Beechnut Lane, Martinsville, VA 24112 or to the King's Grant Fellowship Fund, 350 Kings Way Road, Martinsville, VA 24112.
