Mr. William Henry Goodwyn Jr., affectionately known as "Big Daddy" by many and "Pops" to his grandchildren and family, 80, of 11535 McKenney Highway, McKenney, Va., entered into eternal rest peacefully at his residence on Tuesday, April 15, 2014.
He was born Feb. 8, 1934, to the late William H. Goodwyn Sr. and Etta Ragsdale Goodwyn. He was also predeceased by a sister, Dr. Elsie Goodwyn Holland. He received his primary and secondary education in the Dinwiddie County Public School System. At an early age, he confessed Christ and joined the Big Bethel Baptist Church. Mr. Goodwyn began his working career at Titmus Optical, and was a retired employee of Brown and Williamson Tobacco Inc., Petersburg, and Fiorucci Foods, Chester. He was a member of the McKenney Westside Hunt Club.
Big Daddy was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed auto racing. He was a dedicated family man, and this was exemplified by his dedication to his children and grandchildren. He was well respected and will be missed throughout the community by all who knew him.
Big Daddy leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 62 years, Ada Beatrice Gilliam Goodwyn; daughters, Gayle G. Scott (Benjamin O. Scott Sr.), Carolyn G. Birchette (Donald), Janice G. Alridge, Charlene Goodwyn-Greene (Brian) of Carlisle, Pa., and Angela Goodwyn (Tayvon Murray); two sisters, Gloria G. Harvell (John Larry) and Deborah Goodwyn Morgan (Preston); one brother, Larry M. Goodwyn (Alice); 11 grandchildren, Benjamin O. Scott Jr. (Jameelah), Michael Scott (Jamilah), Jennifer Walton, Randi Lee (Sean), Travis, Tyler and Cameron Greene, Ila and Ashton Murray, Tabitha Bugg (Joseph) and Akeema Jones; great-grandchildren, Creona Bailey-Scott, Meziah, Xavier, Micah, Imani and Jayden Scott, Nisaa Birchette, Jokayla, Nasya, Jo'el and Emmanuel Bugg; three sisters-in-law, Catherine Gilliam, Doris Brown and Marion Gilliam; two brothers-in-law, Kenneth Holland and John Gilliam; an aunt, Frances R. Hicks (Wilbert Lee), and uncle, Fred Ragsdale, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, a devoted family friend, T.L. Shands III and a devoted cousin, Harry E. Smith (Carolyn).
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2014, at Big Bethel Baptist Church, 11101 MD Ragsdale St., McKenney, with the pastor, the Rev. Alexander Williams, officiating. Burial will be in the Big Bethel Burial Park. The family will receive relatives and friends at the residence and can be contacted at 804-478-4271.
