A memory gone but not forgotten; Mr. William Leslie Monroe "B.K.A. or MeMe" was born on sunrise Wednesday, March 13, 1962, and sunset Saturday, March 23, 2013. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rella Mae Monroe.
He was a lifelong resident of Petersburg throughout his life. He accepted Christ at an early age.
He attended Petersburg Public School System, but received his GED from vocational school with the 7001 Program in 1983.
William was employed with Central State for two years, Virginia State for 13 years and Brenco for 18 months.
He leaves to cherish his memory: wife, Joan G. Monroe of Petersburg; son, Ronald Hawthrone (Marie) of Hopewell; daughter, Keisha Monroe of Richmond; devoted sister, Lucille Thomas (Harold); two brothers, Claiborne Monroe (Diane) and Arthur Monroe (Maxine) of Petersburg; stepsister, Lisa Salih of Petersburg; uncle, William Monroe of Petersburg; two aunts, Janice Davis and Maxine Monroe, both of Petersburg; father-in-law Sidney Gholson Sr.; six grandchildren; a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, Anthony Monroe (Tony), Kareem Monroe, India Rives; amongst devoted friends and cousins are Leslie Davis, Jessica, Jasmine, Samantha Davis, Rosetta Green, Henry Davis, Barry White, Raford Johnson, Cab Clark (JC), Michael Winfield, Jewel Munford, all of Petersburg and Gene Rives of Chester; other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2013, 12 p.m. from the Chapel of William N. Bland & Son Funeral Home, 137 Harrison St., Petersburg, with Pastor, Dr. Antonio A. Tucker Sr., officiating.
Interment will follow in Mt. Minnis Memorial Park, Chester, Va. The family will assemble at the residence 11 a.m. the day of the service and may be contacted at brother's home, Curtis Monroe, 804-732-1417.
