Herbert Walker Obituary

Mr. Herbert Evans Walker of 1648 N. Valor Drive, Petersburg, Va., departed this life on Monday, Nov. 1, 2010, at The Retreat Hospital, Richmond, Va.

Mr. Walker was born on July 8, 1926, in Petersburg, Va., to the late Viola Pegram Walker and James Walker Sr. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church, Petersburg, Va., where he formerly served on the usher board.

Mr. Walker received his early education from the Petersburg Public School System and graduated from Peabody High School in 1945. Upon graduating from high school, he entered the United States Army. He completed two years of military service before enrolling at Virginia State College Trade School where he studied tailoring.

Upon completing Virginia State College Trade School, he became a tailor working as a Civil Service employee at Fort Lee Clothing Sales. He retired from the federal government in 1989 after many dedicated years of service.

Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his wife, Annie S. Walker; brother, James Walker Jr. and sister, Mildred W. Vaughan.

Left to cherish his memories are a daughter, Michelle W. Smith; two granddaughters, Jalesha and Tiara Smith; great-granddaughter, Janiya Carter; great-grandson, Kirby Rose Jr.; son-in-law, Alphonso V. Smith; sister, Joan F. Walker, all of Petersburg, Va.; four nieces, Cecelia V. Smith (Johnnie) and Mildred V. Williams (Laurence Sr.) both of Temple Hills, Md.; Wanda V. Smith (Larry Sr.) of Petersburg, Va., and Ruth L. Smith (Ray) of Tacoma, Wash.; nephew, Larry T. Walker of Petersburg, Va., and numerous cousins including, Muriel and Sabrina Spratley, both of Petersburg, Va., and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will held at noon, Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010, at the Chapel of J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment Inc., 102 South Avenue, Petersburg, Va., the Rev. Dr. Andrew J. White Sr., eulogist.

The family will assemble at 11 a.m. the day of the service and will receive friends at 1648 N. Valor Drive, Petersburg, Va., and can be contacted at (804) 647-3517 or (804) 732-6118.
