James Thorpe Obituary

Mr. James Monroe Thorpe, 52, of 15707 Allen Drive, Dinwiddie, entered into eternal rest peacefully early Wednesday morning, Dec. 22, 2010, at his residence. He was born Oct. 4, 1958, to the late Tommie William Thorpe Sr. and Adlean Hayes Thorpe. He received his early education in Dinwiddie County Public Schools. At an early age, he joined the Olive Branch Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, Va. He was employed with Mr. Mack Butterworth Jr. for 33 years in the farming industry. He was preceded in death by his father, the late Tommie W. Thorpe Sr.; and one brother, Frank W. Thorpe. James will be missed by all who knew and loved him dearly.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his mother, Adlean Thorpe of Dinwiddie; siblings, Mary M. Jackson (Thomas) of Petersburg, Blanche M. Arnold (John) of Dinwiddie, the Rev. P. Odessa Clarke (Cardwell), Tommie W. Thorpe Jr., Gale P. Winfield (Floyd), all of Petersburg, Frances V. Burns of Colonial Heights, Cecelia L. Thorpe of Richmond, and Pamela R. Thorpe of Pensacola, Fla.; a devoted friend, Erica Jones of Dinwiddie; a host of nephews, three of whom were devoted, Tarrie D. Thorpe, Raymond Mason, and Milton D. Thorpe; a host of devoted nieces whom loved James dearly, to include a devoted niece, Robin D. Charity (Kenny); an uncle, Joseph P. Walker; a great-aunt, Henrietta Manson; a host of great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and friends.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the caretaker, Gilbert Yates, and the staff of Odyssey Hospice.

A homegoing service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the Olive Branch Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, with the pastor, the Rev. Kevin Northam, officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Public viewing will be held on Monday at the McKenney Chapel from noon to 8 p.m. The family will assemble at the residence at noon on the day of the service.
