Stephen Powell Obituary

Stephen Ray Powell loved God and his family. He believed strongly in tithing and in the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior. Steve was a compassionate, loving and devoted husband. He was an exceptional father of 16-month-old twin boys. Steve was a very "hands-on father." He played trucks, changed diapers, gave them baths, made bottles, and gave his sons lots of hugs and kisses. Steve always told his sons, "I love my boys." He always put his family's needs and wants before his.

Stephen Ray Powell was born on Oct. 11, 1970, and passed away on Sept. 22, 2010, due to a blood clot striking his lungs. He was only 39 years old. Steve married Mary Jo Carole Jones on Oct. 25, 2002. They were just shy of celebrating eight years of marriage. His sons, Ryan Matthew Powell and Brian Elijah Powell were born on May 16, 2009. They are fraternal twins.

We will greatly miss his smile and unconditional love. He was our rock. Now he is with the Lord Jesus Christ and reunited with his father, Ray Powell, who passed away in 2003, at age 60, of cancer.

He is also survived by his uncle and aunt, Ralph and Peggy Powell; stepmother, Jesse Powell; mother- and father-in-law, Thomas and Jo Ann Jones; sister-in-law, Wendy Jones; and nephew and nieces, Nicholas, Emily, Katlyn and Summer; and childhood buddy and best friend, Doug Baker. Stephen Ray Powell was a Christian, husband, father, uncle and friend who will be greatly missed and forever loved.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010, in the Colonial Heights Baptist Church, 17201 Jefferson Davis Highway, Colonial Heights, Va., with the Rev. Dr. Randall T. Hahn officiating. Interment to follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8p.m. Friday (tonight) at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.

My brother was a good person and a private person. Steve was always shy as a young boy. Fond memories of him during our childhood have come flooding back. I pray that God will comfort his family during this time.
