Alice L. Deane Macklin, 96, of Roanoke, Va., was called to her eternal home on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012.

She resided in her latter years with her son, Harold A. Deane Sr. and family. Later, she resided at Golden Living Center in Petersburg, Va. Alice was born on April 12, 1916, to the late John Minor Deane and Delia Cary Deane in Botetourt County, Va.
She received her early education in Roanoke, Va., at Lucy Addison High School and furthered her education in the fields of cosmetology and secretarial studies.
Alice was a member of First Baptist Church of Cloverdale, Va., where she remained active and faithful for many years with the choir, Usher Board, and community involvements.
Alice was a musician. She was a pianist and singer and appreciated all kinds of music. Alice had a zest for life, people, and was proud of the accomplishments of her family and friends. She was an outstanding administrative assistant for the District of Columbia government, a secretary and agent for Universal, North Carolina Mutual and Richmond Beneficial Life Insurance Companies. Alice was also a beautician, who was elected to a national office in the Virginia State Beautician Association. She counseled and advised numerous relatives and community friends about life and careers. She will truly be missed by all who knew her and spent time with her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Macklin Sr.; 15 brothers and sisters (one twin, Eunice); two stepchildren, Theodore Macklin Jr. and Barbara Macklin Motley; several other relatives and friends.
Left to cherish her memory are a son, Harold A. Deane Sr. of Petersburg, Va., formerly of Roanoke, Va.; daughter-in-law, Thelma; granddaughter, Benita M. Deane of Bowie, Md.; grandson, Harold A. Deane Jr. of Petersburg, Va.; great-grandsons, Harold A. and Christopher J.; stepson, Robert Macklin (Lorraine); other members of the Deane and Macklin families; special nieces, Mildred Hancock (James) and family, Elaine O'Neal (Ralph) and family; grandniece, Audrey Young (Fred) and family; the First Baptist Church of Cloverdale family and friends; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Thanks to the staff of Golden Living Center and Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, Va., for their medical assistance and care. Special thanks to the First Baptist Church of Cloverdale, and to Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home for providing prayers, kindness, and services to our loved one, Mrs. Alice L. Deane Macklin.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home, 1002 Moorman Road NW, Roanoke, Va. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012, at First Baptist Church of Cloverdale, 193 Updike Road, Cloverdale, Va., with the Rev. Dr. Tommy London officiating.
