Mrs. Alice Mae Blanding Murff, of 307 West City Point Road, Hopewell, quietly departed this earthly life Monday, April 28, 2014, at John Randolph Medical Center, Hopewell. She was born on Oct. 10, 1926 in Scotland Neck, N.C., to the late James and Elsie Blanding. She was the youngest of 10 children.

Mrs. Murff was educated in the Halifax County public school system. After moving from Scotland Neck, N.C., to Prince George she had been employed with Fort Lee military base as a cook for many years and JRMC aiding the sick until her declining health. She was well loved by the staff.

Mrs. Murff met Johnny Murff in Prince George and from that union they reared two sons, Ricky Murff and Otis Charles.

Mrs. Murff began her Christian journey at an early age and joined Roanoke Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Scotland Neck. When she moved to Virginia, she became a member of Powell's Creek Baptist Church in Prince George. Later, she became a servant at the House of Prayer, Harrison Street, Petersburg, and fellowshipped with the Prayer Room of Faith Apostolic Church, Hopewell. In her latter days, she united with Baptist Temple Baptist Church where she became an ardent member of the Helen Seward Missionary Circle and fellowshipped with the Lamb of God Children's Ministry, Hopewell. She attended church until her health declined, but her faith never faltered. A few days before passing, she experienced significant pain, she said, "I am still blessed."

She liked tending to her flowers in the yard and when she couldn't, she substituted artificial plants. Whenever she spoke her mind, you knew what she was thinking because she told you. She found love and pleasure attending the Riverside Pace program for the elderly.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Johnny Murff; five brothers, James, Dennis, Ernest, Egevan and Joseph Blanding and four sisters, Elizabeth Charles, Laura Wilson, Annie Barnes and Clover Raigns.

She leaves to cherish and celebrate her memory: beloved and devoted son, Ricky Murff; grandchildren, Rico Murff, Damien Murff, Phillip Wanamaker, Natasha Turner and Xavier Bey; several great-grandchildren; special niece, Phillisco Walker who cared for her like a daughter; and Bobby Walker, whom she thought of as a son-in-law; host of nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.

Celebration of life service for Mrs. Alice Mae B. Murff will be held at 12 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at Powell's Creek Baptist Church, Prince George, the Rev. Dennis Blanding, pastor, officiate. Interment will follow at church cemetery. There will be a wake from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 5, 2014, at the Turner-Bland funeral establishment.
