On July 29, 2014, our hearts were saddened by the passing of our loved one, Barbara Jean Hill Pettaway.

She was the daughter of the late Benjamin James Hill Jr. and Lannie Smith Hill.
Barbara was baptized at an early age at Oak Street AME Zion Church, Petersburg.
Barbara was a 1965 graduate of Peabody High School. After graduation, she attended Tennessee A&I State University, Nashville, Tenn., and Virginia State College (University), Petersburg.
She was employed in the Petersburg Public Schools as a substitute teacher and teacher aide, secretary in the department of Special Education at VSU, the Virginia Department of Corrections and director of Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
She was predeceased by her husband, Floyd Clayton Pettaway Sr.
She leaves to cherish her memory: one son, Floyd Clayton Pettaway Jr. (Catherine) of Virginia Beach; one sister, Benita Hill Morris (Herbert) of Chester; two grandchildren, Trevon and Christina of Virginia Beach; one godgrandson, Amarion Johnson of Petersburg; four sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; one uncle, George E. Smith of Charlotte, N.C.; several cousins, other relatives and devoted friends, to include, Ann "Lillie" Brown and Rosa Taylor; along with neighbors, Donnie Seaborn and family, Carolyn Robinson, Ronald Smith Sr., and beloved family dog, BJ.
Homegoing celebration for Mrs. Barbara Jean Hill Pettaway will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Petersburg. The Rev. Dr. Robert A. Diggs, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow at Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg.
Family and friends are asked to assemble 10:15 a.m. at the church on the day of service, and may contact the sister, Benita Hill Morris, by calling 804-748-6543.
