Deacon Bernard Clinton Jones, of Petersburg, Va., departed this life on Friday, April 18, 2014, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, Va.

Bernard Jones was born on Aug. 1, 1929, to the late Otelia and Bernard Jones. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Ernest A. Jones, and an uncle, John Clinton Jones.

At an early age, Bernard professed his faith, was baptized and joined the membership of Royal Baptist Church. He later became a member of Bethesda Baptist Church of Colonial Heights, where he served faithfully as a deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. He was also active with the Sanctuary Choir, Usher Ministry, as well as the Prison Ministry.

Bernard served two years in the United States Army and retired from Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corp. after 31 years of service.

Bernard leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife, Barbara E. Jones; two daughters, Beverly Harris (Milton) of South Chesterfield, Va., and Martesha Tucker of Petersburg, Va.; four granddaughters, Felicia Reeves (George) of Petersburg, Va., Latoya Crockett (Marshall) and Sherika Harris, both of South Chesterfield, Va., and Eva Tucker of Petersburg, Va.; one grandson, Joshua Tucker of Petersburg, Va.; and one great-grandson, Elijah Harris of South Chesterfield, Va.; one daughter-in-law, Joice Mason of South Chesterfield, Va.; one sister, Lillian Hedges of Chester, Va.; three sisters-in-law, Irma Campbell (Michael) of Petersburg, Va., Audry Smith of Millsboro, Del., and Grace Thompson of Media, Pa.; eight brothers-in-law, Samule Scott (Iana) of Chattanooga, Tenn., Keith Winslow and Jerome Winslow (Cathy), both of Pocomoke, Md., Kenneth Winslow (Laverne) of Tittisville, Fla., Marvin Turnell of Pocomoke, Md., Herbert Scott (Ann) and Gene Scott, both of Brookhaven, Pa., and Stanley Scott of West Chester, Pa.; one nephew, Stanley Hedges (Maxine) of Columbia, S.C.; one niece, Rosolyn Hedges of Chester, Va.; devoted nephew, Samule Howard of Petersburg, Va.; two devoted cousins, Dorothy May Fulton and Otelia White, both of Petersburg, Va.; one daughter-in-love, the Rev. Mary Jamison (Dave) of South Chesterfield, Va.; and host of other relatives and friends.

Services for Deacon Bernard C. Jones will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2014, at Bethesda Baptist Church, 15800 Woods Edge Road, Colonial Heights, Va.; the Rev. Juanita A.W. Harrison, pastor, eulogist. Interment to follow at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery.
