Bettie Downey Obituary
She was baptized at an early age and Bettie was a dedicated member of Bethany Missionary Baptist Church, Petersburg. She was well-known by the Blandford community. Bettie enjoyed church functions and loved gospel music and programs. She absolutely adored family and family gatherings. She showed courage through even the most difficult of times and was very encouraging to us all. Even through her illness she showed great strength and was determined to do the most she could do independently and get the most she could out of her life. Her angelic smile will be sorely missed.
Left to cherish her memories are: one brother, Roy Lee Moss of Oxford N.C.; eight daughters, Dorothy Braxton of Petersburg, Rosemary Wimberly of Springfield Va., Deborah Downey, Pamela Hargrave (Isaac), Joyce Downey, Brenda Downey, all of Petersburg, Linda Young (Charles) of Killeen, Texas, and Lori Downey of South Carolina; 10 grandchildren, Diana B. Braxton and Leon Braxton of Petersburg, Tianca Wimberly of Springfield, Maurice Hargrave, O'Brian Hargrave (Timara), Tre' Hargrave, Tariq Hargrave, all of Petersburg, Brian Downey, Erika Griffin of Killeen, Texas, and Shemcia Downey of Petersburg; a devoted great-granddaughter, Briana Braxton of Petersburg; and a host of nieces and nephews, family and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, at Bethany Missionary Baptist Church, Petersburg, where the pastor, the Rev. Eli Melvin, will officiate. The interment will follow in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg. The family is asked to assemble at noon at the residence on the day of the service and will receive friends at 922 Sunset Ave., Petersburg, and may be contacted by calling (804) 862-3325.
