Callie McClain Obituary

Callie Sue Harris McClain entered eternal rest Monday, Oct. 26, at her residence.

Mrs. McClain was the daughter of the late Goler and Evelyn Harris, and was born Feb. 2, 1938, in Harris, N.C. Mrs. McClain majored in education at John C. Smith University, Charlotte, N.C. Mrs. McClain moved to Virginia in 1966. She worked at Seward Luggage, Petersburg, Va., until she began working for Chesterfield County Public Schools. Her career in teaching ended after a life altering accident in the JC Penney Department Store, Petersburg, Va. Mrs. McClain began collecting and dealing antiques. Her knowledge of sewing propelled a lucrative hobby of designing and repairing fine furs. She occasionally modeled her one-of-a-kind creations for the late legendary Mr. George Wells. Mrs. McClain was known for her eccentricity and regality that transcended her artistic abilities. She was a visionary in fashion and design alike. During the past 10 years, Mrs. McClain dedicated her free time to her flower garden that vividly expressed hher passion for vibrant colors and beauty.

Mrs. McClain leaves to honor her memory, husband of 50 years, Robert L. McClain of Ettrick, Va., and her only child, whom she loved, lavished and spoiled, Melinda G.G. McClain-McGhee of Norwalk, Conn., and her only grandchild, whom she loved, nurtured and spoiled as if he were her very own. Preceding Mrs. McClain in death are two brothers, William G. Harris and Jerry L. Harris, and her sister, Zelma L. Harris.

Mrs. McClain's surviving siblings are Sam (Daphne) Harris of Monclair, N.J., Andrew (Jean) Harris of Bridgeport, Conn., Bob (Dora) Harris of Paterson, N.J., Shirley (Frank) Frierson of Sumter, S.C., Peggy O. Fields (Muhammed Jabaah) of Norwalk, Conn., Donnell Harris of Forest City, N.C., Robert Harris of Denver; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Our thanks for the genuine love, care and concern of very dear friends of Mrs. McClain, Mark and Mary Russell, and "Uncle Tim" and all that offered sympathy and support of the family. "We are very grateful." Wake and burial are private at the request of the deceased, by invitation only.

Remains rest at the Tucker's Funeral Home, 415 Halifax St., Petersburg. A.A. Tucker, funeral director.

My childhood memories of The Harris Family will live on with me for my entire life. Life is to short to not realize how valuable and special all of our family members are to us. Aunt Callie I will never forget you, as I am sorry the last time I saw you was at Grandma's funeral, it means so much to me to know that I did get to see you one last time... You were always very sweet and I always enjoyed the times I spent with you. Thank You for the memories and I will never forget you... Uncle Rob and Melinda I love you and you are in my thoughts always!

Sorry to hear about the loss of Mrs. McClain. We had just chatted for over an hour several weeks ago and made plans to visit. The news was a shock. My deepest condolences go out to the family. Another Court Street Flower has been collected for heaven's flower arrangement.

Rob and Melinda,
You have my deepest condolences. Words cannot express. Whenever I start to feel sad about Callie's passing, I just remember all of the good times we spent with her. She welcomed me into the Harris family with open arms and with her unique style. I remember every year, arriving to her home in the middle of the night (on our way to N.C.) and how she'd be wiating up for us with hot food and hugs. She was one of a kind; charming, stylish, rich, Fierce with a heart of gold and the "gift of gab".
Bless you Callie. Love, Daphne
