Mr. Carl Leroy Blackwell, 71, of 2431 Parkview Ave., of Petersburg, Va., was called home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at John Randolph Medical Center, Hopewell Va.

He retired from Southside Regional Hospital after 35 years of service. He was born on Jan. 1, 1942, to the late Harry S. and Rolette B. Blackwell Sr. He was a member of the Usher Union of Petersburg, Hopewell and Vicinity.

Carl is preceded in death by four brothers, Earl, Robert, Gerald, Willie, and one niece, Cynthia Ann Walker.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 46 years, Mable Lewis Blackwell; three devoted children, daughter, Vickie Blackwell (Kevin), and two sons, Vincent Bates ( Terri) and Kerrington Blackwell (Belinda), all of Petersburg, Va. He also has two granddaughters, Shannon Lee and devoted-Diamond Patterson, both of Petersburg; devoted grandson, Kevin Jr. (Tamika) of Norfolk Va. Carl also has two brothers, Fletcher and Harry (Boo) Jr. Blackwell; four sisters, Shirley Morton of Colonial Heights, Va., Doris Walker and Patricia A. Locker (Willie), both of Petersburg, Va., and Geraldine Santos of Yonkers, N.Y.; six sisters-in-law, Carolyn Jones Williams (Arthur) of Baltimore, Joyce Lewis Brown of Dinwiddie County, Va., Costella Coleman (Benjamin), Nancy, Mary Lewis and Angela Dance (Adrian), all of Petersburg, Va.; devoted friends, Mark, Theodore and Merilla Perry, Herbert and Gladys Dabney, Ernest and Mary Beasley, Art and Becky Henderson of Colonial Heights, Va., Ms. Turner, Ms. Reynolds, the Smith family, all of Parkview Avenue, Petersburg, Va., Mitchell and Robertson families of Petersburg Va., the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Ushers (Male and Senior Ladies), and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral service for Mr. Carl L. Blackwell will be held noon Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, 800 Augusta Ave., Petersburg, Va.; the Rev. Dr. Wesley K. McLaughlin, pastor, eulogist. Interment to follow at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery.
