Clara Queen Obituary

Mrs. Clara Gholson Queen, 87, of Dinwiddie, Va., departed this life Saturday evening, Sept. 25, 2010, at the Southside Regional Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 16, 1922, in Long Island, N.Y., to the late Moses Gholson Sr. and the late Mary E. Gholson. At an early age she became a member of the Center Star Baptist Church, and was a former member of the Choir and Missionary Ministry. She loved her church family and attended services as long as her health permitted her to do so. Other than her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, James Queen Sr.; a daughter, Ethel Queen Weaver; sisters, Onell Harvell, Ruth Walker, Mary Gholson, Helen Gholson and Alice Kay Washington; brothers, Moses Gholson Jr., Walter Gholson, James E. Gholson and Eugene Walker.

She leaves to cherish her memories, a son, James G. Queen Jr. (Ruth); one aunt, Hattie Catherine Gilliam, all of Dinwiddie; grandchildren, Benjamin Weaver, Jennifer Queen Hurt, Carol A. Robinson (Anthony) of North Carolina, Kenneth C. Weaver (Susie), Christopher Queen (Pricilla) of Texas, Edward Weaver (Leah), Sharon Gay, very devoted, Richard Weaver (Tonya) and James Queen III (Sabrina); 14 great-grandchildren, Arquetta, Toni, Onte', Darius, Joshua, Meredith, Jessica, Ron Jr., Shawn, Victoria, Christopher Jr., Qulya, Jordan and Kaylan; six great-great-grandchildren; a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, to include Polly Winfield, Mrs. Synder and Ida Morgan.

A homegoing celebration will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010, at the Center Star Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, with the pastor, the Rev. Dr. Jimmie L. Walker Sr., officiating. Burial will commence at the church cemetery. The family will assemble at the church at 12:45 p.m. on the day of the service. Public viewing will be held today until 8 p.m. at the McKenney Chapel.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the J.M. Johnson & Son Funeral Home, 530 S. Sycamore St., Petersburg, (804) 863-4411.

To the Queen family, my prayers are with you. Ms. Clara will always have a place in my heart . She was the nice lady who always gave me a ride to school during my early school years ( 1st and 2nd grades). As I reflect,she was a woman of values and character.
