Claude Welton "Simp" Harris Jr. died Dec. 18, 2010, following a brief illness.

He was born on Nov. 21, 1922, to Claude W. Harris Sr. and Mary Hardee Harris. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Oliver Lee (Butch) Harris.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Muriel, whom he met in 1944 while stationed in England during his Air Force service. He is also survived by two sons, Ray Scott and his wife, Sandra, (Palmer), Wayne Allan and his wife, Sherry (Brady); a daughter, Claudia Harris Wilding and her husband, Doyle; three sisters, Adele Phelps, Catherine Bobb and Joyce Harris; a sister-in-law, Jean Kay Harris; and eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Throughout his life, Claude was always active in sports. Whether playing softball or coaching baseball, basketball, and tennis, his intensity and desire to excel will never be matched. Regardless of the weather, he could often be found on the tennis court well into his 70s. He was retired from E.I. DuPont and a member of the ASA Fastpitch Softball Hall of Fame. He will be missed by all.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010, at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 214 N. 6th Ave., Hopewell, Va. Funeral services and interment will be private. Condolences may be registered atwww.nelsencares.com.
