Mr. David Gantt Jr., of 1964 Coggin St., Petersburg, Va., departed this life on Monday, April 8, 2013. He was born on July 9, 1930, in Freeport (Long Island), N.Y., to Annie and David Gantt Sr.

He graduated from Freeport High School in 1948 and entered the Army, where he attended tailoring school at Camp Lee (now Fort Lee), Va. In 1950, he met and married June Lyons (who preceded him in passing in April 2002), and remained married for 52 years.
He moved to Hempstead Long Island, N.Y., and joined the Congregational Church of South Hempstead. In 1984, he would join Memorial Presbyterian Church in Roosevelt (Long Island), N.Y. Upon moving to Petersburg, he joined Zion Baptist Church and also became a member of the J.B. Memorial Choir.
David was a Scoutmaster and worked as an upholsterer. Later, he worked for the New York City Housing Authority, a position he held for 31 years before retiring in 1990. He retired as an assistant superintendant. David was a member of the Black Officials in the Housing Authority and 369th Veterans Association.
He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Eugene, George, Leroy, Philip, Wilfred, Wayne and Nathan.
He is survived by two sons, Michael David Gantt and Douglas Gantt; one grandson, Michael David Gantt Jr.; two sisters, Eloise Smith and Georgianna Ricks (husband, Douglas); sisters-in-law, Eva Baxter and Julia Batts; devoted brothers-in-law, Joseph Lyons Sr., Lawrence Lyons (wife, Dorothy) and Rudolph Lyons (wife, Lois); devoted cousin, Arthur Chatman; devoted niece, Darlene and her husband, James Thomas; and a host of other devoted nieces, nephews, and loyal friends, to include one special friend, Carolyn Jackson.
A funeral service for Mr. David Gantt Jr. will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at the Chapel of J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment Inc, 102 South Ave., Petersburg, Va.; the Rev. Tracey Lyons, associate minister of Good Shepherd Baptist Church, Petersburg, Va., eulogist. The interment to follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park.
