David "Dave" Lee Matthews lost his eight-month battle to lung cancer on Monday, April 15, 2013. He died peacefully at Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Hospital at the age of 59. He was born Nov. 30, 1953, in Keyser, W.Va., to Betty Matthews and Justin Scheermesser. Those that knew Dave know that he was a fighter until the last moments.

A widower, he was married to Joyce Marie Matthews for 34 years. She passed from cancer in 2010. They were the most loving and happy couple creating a loving household.

During his service in the U.S. Army, Dave and Joyce were afforded the opportunity to spend time abroad in Germany where they traversed the continent with their children. They spent endless hours visiting and touring numerous castles and historical sites of western Europe. They rewarded their children with lifetime experiences.

After returning stateside, they moved to Hopewell in 1988. They were a match made in heaven, and are now reunited there.

He retired from the U.S. Army as a sergeant first class after 21 years of service in 1991. After serving in the armed services, he was employed at Noland Company in Prince George, where he worked for 22 years. In all of his ventures in life, he took every opportunity to help others wherever possible. His first priority in life was always family, and he made every opportunity to surround himself with them. He cared deeply about those around him. He lived life to the fullest. He was a very joyful, caring, and loving father and person to be around.

He is survived by: four children; five grandchildren; a mother-in-law; and brother-in-law. His oldest daughter, Cybil Marie Merritt, 39, with her son, Kristopher, 21, and daughter, Kayli, 11, of Hopewell; his son, Jamie Alan Matthews, 37, of Richmond, and wife, Stephanie; his daughter, Jennifer Matthews Harris, 34, and husband, Jeffery Harris, and son, Chase Alexander Matthews, 10, of South Chesterfield; his youngest son, Steven Edward Matthews, 33, and wife, Gina Matthews, with children Hunter David Matthews, 9, and daughter, Cassie Lynn Matthews, 6, of Chester. He will always be remembered for his outgoing, colorful, and loving personality.

It was his last wish to be cremated and to host a joint remembrance ceremony for both himself and his wife Joyce. Services will be held at Matoaca Christian Fellowship on Sunday, April 21, 2013, at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to Matoaca Christian Fellowship in reference to the Matthews family. All that knew Dave and Joyce are welcome to attend, celebrate, and honor their memories.
