Mr. David S. Batte Sr., of 22006 McKenney Highway, Stony Creek, Va., was called to be with our beloved Heavenly Father suddenly on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 13, 2013, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, Va.

He was born April 4, 1941, in Dinwiddie County, Va., and was the son of the late Roger and Georgianna Hall Batte. He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Otis Claiborne and Rebecca Drumgoole, and four brothers, John, Robert, Henry and Evert Batte (who passed away on the same day in Maryland).

At an early age, he confessed Christ and joined the Rocky Mount Baptist Church of McKenney, Va., having served as a Sunday School superintendent for several years and singing with the Senior Choir.

He was employed at Brown and Williams Tobacco Inc., Brenco and Smith Setzer & Son until retirement. David's hobbies were hunting and fishing.

He leaves to treasure a legacy of precious memories, a wife of 48 years, Jean Mabry Batte; two children, David Batte Jr. (Conceita) and Vida McFarland, both of Stony Creek, Va.; three granddaughters, Shautay Atkins, Charnele McFarland and Vanaisha Skipper; two grandsons, Davon Atkins and Brandon McFarland; three great-grandchildren, Trinity Reed, King Reed and Da'Naisha Taylor; a son-in-law, Horace McFarland; one brother, the Rev. Thomas Batte (Gladys) of Baltimore; sisters-in-law, Mildred Batte of Sykesville, Md., and Teady Jefferson (George) of Stony Creek, Va.; a brother-in-law, Lawrence Mabry (Virginia) of Stony Creek, Va.; two very devoted nieces, Sara Kimble (Morris) of Trenton, N.J., and Rebecca Tucker (Marsyas) of Petersburg, Va.; three devoted nephews, Thomas Batte (Felicia), Ferlando Battle(Tiersa) and Rico Batte; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, among them, Floyd Taylor, Melvin Taylor, Lawrence Hall, Herbert Prosise, Ernest Pegram, Beverly Tucker, Mike Mabry and the Cherry Hill Hunting Club.

A funeral service for Mr. David S. Batte Sr. will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at Rocky Mount Baptist Church, 24901 Ridge Road, McKenney, Va.; the Rev. Carlos Jordan, pastor, eulogist. The interment to follow in the church cemetery.
