Edward "Bip" King Sr. quietly passed away Oct. 3, 2013, after a brief illness.

Known by family and friends as "Bip," Edward was born in Prince George, Va., on March 27, 1931, to the late George and Sallie King. He was educated in the public schools of Prince George. Leaving Prince George, Edward King entered the United States Army as a young man.

Edward and his family lived in Hampton and Newport News, Va., for a number of years, where he worked for the Newport News Ship Building. Returning to Prince George in 1967, he remained a resident of Prince George until his death. He retired as deputy sheriff from the Hopewell Sheriff's Department.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister, George King Jr., Shirley King, Floyd King, William King and Sallye Bowins.

Edward leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife of 62 years, Rosa King; his devoted son, Edward King Jr. (Thelma) of Charles City; and his caring daughter, Rose King Smith (Frank Tracy) of Nokesville, Va.; five grandchildren, Renee King Barnes (Eugene) of Rocky Mount, N.C., Edward King III (Dawn) of Macon, Ga., Michael Smith (Michelle) of Fairfax, Va., Ebony King Howlett (Michael) of Richmond, Va., and Christopher Smith of Manassas, Va.; five great-grandchildren: Ke'Ara, Daija, Kendell, Jaylan and Jazmine; his sisters, Katherine Mason and Norville Wooden, both of Hampton, Va., June Milton (Norman) of Indian Trails, N.C., and Lillian Boyd (Frank) of Prince George; eight sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at Harrison Grove Baptist Church, 10415 Merchant Hope Road, North Prince George; the pastor, the Rev. Calvin E. Lewis Sr., officiating. The family will receive friends at 10:30 a.m. at the church prior to the service Wednesday.
