Frank Samuel Bobb (Aug. 26, 1919-Nov. 2, 2009), born in Prince George County, Va., spent most of his life in Hopewell. He passed away Nov. 2, 2009, at the age of 90.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Barbara Bobb.
He is survived by his beloved sister, Mary B. Blaho of Hopewell; his nephew Albert J. Blaho (Jane) of Tavares, Fla.; and niece, Barbara B. Marr (Frank) of Dumfries, Va.; four grandnephews, David Marr (Ruth) of Spotsylvania, Va., Keith Marr (Bridget) of Sarasota, Fla., Justin Blaho of Denver, Bentley Blaho (Reba) of Centennial, Colo.; one grandniece, Jennifer Doughty (Evan) of Florence, Ore.; and nine great-grandnephews and nieces, Evan, Katherine, Nathaniel, Kyle, Emily and Natalie Marr of Spotsylvania, Va., Preston Blaho of Centennial, Colo., and Samuel and Emilia Marr of Sarasota, Fla.
During his youth, Frank loved to play baseball. He was a big fan of the Hopewell High School basketball and local and professional football teams for many years. He served in the U.S. Navy from Oct. 10, 1942, to Oct. 10, 1945, as an aviation electrician's mate second class. He was assigned to the naval stations in the United States and to the USS Bunker Hill, which supported numerous Central and South Pacific campaigns such as the Gilbert, Solomons, Marshall and Marianas Islands. He served on the USS Bunker Hill for part of the time period when it was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation (one of five carriers so honored by President Harry S. Truman). He was also honored as a plank owner of the USS Bunker Hill. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and maintained interest in veterans events by belonging to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Frank worked at the Hercules Powder Co. from 1945 to 1981 as an electrician. Frank was an active bowler for the Hercules bowling league. During retirement he was active in local singing groups. He enjoyed singing tenor with a barbershop group, the seniors that he met at First Baptist Church and the Nazareth Lutheran Church Choir. He also became a skilled woodworker, building many trinkets and items such as cedar chests.
Frank was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church and active member of Nazareth Lutheran in Hopewell, being very involved in his younger years.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 214 N. 6th Ave., Hopewell, VA 23960. A service will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at the Nazareth Lutheran Church, 1711 Grant St., Hopewell, VA 23860. Interment to follow Appomattox Cemetery.
