Obituary Condolences

Deacon Garland Russell Johnson, 84, of Waverly, departed his life at his residence on Monday, June 11, 2018. He was born June 16, 1933, in the big town of Newville, VA. Garland was baptized and joined Wilborne Baptist Church at an early age under the leadership of Rev. C.M. Morgan, Sr. He later continued his Christian experience as an active member at Liberty Baptist Church, where he served on the Deacon and Usher Board until his health declined. Mr. Johnson also was a former Masonic brother of Jerusalem Plank Road Lodge Prince Hall Affiliation and a member of the Eastern Sussex County Senior Citizen.

Deacon Johnson was a hard dedicated employee of International Paper formerly Masonite and retired with over 30 years of service. He was a loving husband, awesome father and even better grandfather. His ultimate joy was working, staying active in his yard, and spending time with family and friends. To know him was to love him. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God strengthen him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace.

Garland was preceded in death by his mother, Louvinia Johnson Smith; best friend and wife, Rose H. Johnson; aunt, Annie E. Ruffin; two brothers, Lawrence Goode and Roland Goode; two sisters, Delilah Pickard and Audrey Bell; brother-in-law, Morris Lee Harris and sister-in-law, Fannie H. Davis.

Garland is survived by his loving family who will miss him deeply. He leaves to cherish three devoted children, Valeria (Waverly), Gerald (Linda) of Smithfield, Eric (Pamela) of Waverly; four devoted grandchildren, Alexandria of Carrollton, LaNesha and Charmaine of Waverly, and Danielle (Thomas) of Prince George; three great grandchildren, Destiny, Jamie, and Tyriq; two devoted sisters, Sophronia Goode and Lucy Hawkins; and a host of other relatives, nieces, nephews and friends.

Garland was a God fearing man who was committed to his family, church and work. His word was his bond and everyone knew it. He lived every moment that was given, neither sickness nor hard times would rob him of. He was a humble man that did not complain, who enjoyed the fruits of life even through his sickness until God called him home.

The family express a special thanks to devoted friends, Douglas Williams and David Bolling, Kindred Hospice of Petersburg, the Liberty Baptist Church family of Waverly, Crystal Wilkins, Sussex County Sheriff Department, Sussex County Public Schools, relatives, and neighbors for all of your prayers, support, visit, phone calls, and whatever the part.

Services will be held 12:00 Noon, Saturday, June 16, 2018, at Liberty Baptist Church, 319 Railroad Avenue, Waverly, VA, the Rev. Karl R. Marshall, eulogist. Interment to follow at Waverly Cemetery.

The family will assemble 11:00 A.M. the day of the service and receive friends at 224 Locust Drive, Waverly, VA.
