Mr. George Gustava Gordon most commonly known as "Jack" but affectionately called "GG" of Petersburg, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, following a period of declining health. He was born in Ettrick on Aug. 19, 1933, to the late Louise Gordon. He attended Ettrick and Petersburg public schools where he graduated from Peabody High School, class of 1953. He retired from Honeywell (formerly Firestone Synthetic Plant) after 40 plus years of service.

Shortly after his graduation from Peabody, he served in the U.S. Army and later in the U.S. Army Reserve, 80th Division. Following his tour in the Army, he married Esther Rose Johnson. Their union blessed them with two children before her untimely death in 1964. In 1970, he was blessed again and married Bessie R. Gordon.

Since childhood, George had been a faithful member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church in Petersburg, where he was a member of the Military Support Ministry, serving as chaplain and a member of the Brotherhood Group.

He had many loves in his life, other than his family, his number one passion was singing. He is a former member of Mount Olivet's Mass, inspirational, and male choirs. He also sung for many years with the Fourth Baptist Church, Richmond, Carter Allen Memorial Sanctuary Choir and Male Chorus, and the Goodwill Chorus of Petersburg.

For nearly 40 years he was a committed member of Pocahantas #7, Lodge F & A Masons (PHA), Keystone Chapter #4 High Royal Arch Masons (PHA), St. Marks Commandery #3 Knight of Temple Masons (PHA), Petersburg Consistory #144 32 +33 degrees Masons and the Leonard Cox Council #6 Royal Select Masons (PHA).

George was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and brother. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mattie Gordon.

George leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Bessie R. Gordon; son, Gustavus Gordon (Karen) of Chesterfield, Va.; daughter, Glenessa Gordon of Newark, N.J.; grandsons, Gustavus Wyche of Bowie, Md., and Kyle Gordon of Ettrick, Va.; granddaughters, Sharie Gordon of Ettrick, Va., Nyla Gordon Crocker of Newark N.J., and Shaniqua Darden of Chesterfield, Va.; nieces, Virginia Mitchell of Chester, Va., Denise Bowser, Carolyn Gordon, and Rosalyn Mallory, all of Petersburg, Va., Shavonia Peterson, Penelope Anthony (Paul) and Adrianne Harper, all of Richmond, Va.; one nephew, Theodore Gordon of Petersburg, Va.; a devoted brother-in-law, Jerome Burge (Darlene) of Petersburg, Va. He also leaves a close family friend, Belinda Gordon; special lifelong friends, James Kitt and Raymond Vaughan; and a host of devoted cousins; nieces; nephews; and friends.

Services for Mr. George G. Gordon will be held at 12 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, 800 Augusta Ave., Petersburg, the Rev. Dr. Wesley K. McLaughlin, pastor, eulogist. Interment to follow at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery.

Wake service will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, at the funeral establishment.
