George Strother Bernard III, age 72, of Nassau, Bahamas, and formerly of Petersburg and Richmond, died Nov. 5, 2012.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Strother Bernard Jr. and Hazel Lee Howell Bernard, and his brother, Sidney Howell Bernard.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 32 years, Anita Wilchcombe Bernard of Nassau; their son, George Strother Bernard IV of Baltimore; stepdaughters, Cecile Dames of Nassau, Philippa Sumlin of Accokeek, Md., and Ericka Materre of Glen Burnie, Md.; sisters, Elizabeth Ashby Bernard Hatch of Lake Worth, Fla., and Hazel Lee Bernard of Roanoke; brother, David Meade Bernard of Richmond; and many other appreciative relatives and friends.

George's altruism was expressed in his service to the public schools and Anglican Church of the Bahamas. A licensed pilot, he transported supplies and personnel for these vital institutions at no charge. He was a productive and enthusiastic Kiwanian in Virginia, Florida and the Bahamas. He brought joy to the children of the Bahamas by playing Santa Claus at Christmastime. He helped start the Anglican Church of the Epiphany in Nassau, where his funeral was held Nov. 14.

George was educated in the public schools of Petersburg and at Woodberry Forest. He graduated from the University of Richmond in 1960 with a degree in chemistry.

A graveside service will be held at Petersburg's Blandford Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 7, 2012, the Rev. Richard Greenwood presiding.
