Gerardo Flamiano Obituary

Gerardo (Jerry) Figuro Flamiano, 82, of Petersburg, passed away on Sept. 27, 2010.

He was born on Oct. 3, 1927 in Dumalag, Capiz, on the island of Panay in the Philippines. He was the eldest of eight children born to Resurrection Flamiano and Nieves Figuro Flamiano. During the World War II occupation, he was captured by Japanese soldiers and held prisoner for 45 days. They forced him to carry ammunition and supplies while they chased down Filipino guerillas. His family, who had given him up for dead, rejoiced at his return. He survived, he said, because of constant prayer.

Jerry dedicated his life to the service of his country, family, and church. In 1946 he joined the Philippine Scouts and in 1953 he joined the United States Army and became a U.S. citizen. His 27 years of military service included three tours of duty in Korea and two in Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service against hostile forces in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive of 1968. After he retired from the military in 1973, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service until 1989.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 52 years, Hazel Louise Flamiano, and their five children, Jeanne Fury, Dominic Flamiano, Dolores Flamiano, Desiree Ringer and Diane Fusco. He was a devoted husband and loving father who worked countless hours on the family's home on High Street. In his "little acre" he created a beautiful garden with vegetables, strawberries and flowers. He was happiest when sharing this special place with his wife, five children and 14 grandchildren. They admired his hard work and adored his warm smile, happy disposition, silly songs and classic banana-coconut-pecan pancakes. In the past three years, he welcomed five great-grandchildren to the family.

For 42 years, Jerry was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Petersburg, Va., where he served as lector and eucharistic minister. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he served as treasurer. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 1, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Father Jay Biber officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Crater Community Hospice, 3916 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, VA 23805.

My Dearest Granddaddy,
Not until now have I found that to truly miss someone could hurt so bad. Even though it would only be selfish of me to wish you still here with us in pain that you surely don't deserve I cant help but to have to be strong, wipe away or swallow the tears & pull myself together every time you cross my mind because I miss you more then words can say and never will i ever look up to a person with so much pride, love and respect.I know I haven't been the best person I could be but I do remember all the many times I made you smile, proud, and happy.I could go on for almost ever about all the happy memories I have with you especially with all the grandchildren on High St. I most recently remember how you would ask me at the kitchen table when we were reminiscing if i remembered when you would drop me off at the daycare every morning early when i was under 2 yrs old and how i would cry every time you turned on the daycare street because I didn't want my Granddaddy leaving me, and then Grandmama would say "Ohh Jerry You know Sunny doesnt remember that so long ago" and how you would tell us you remember when you were very very young and that would start off another story or event in your life that you'd tell. I am so very thankful that you were able to meet and spend time with Adriana as well as the other great grandchildren, and even tho she may not remember you she will hear how great and unremarkable of a man you were and she will also see the love and caring shown so clear in your eyes in the pictures of you holding her as a baby. I know your FAMILY is what made you the happiest. I can only strive now to do the best that you would want me to do. Often times recently I think..What would Granddaddy want me to do? I know you always told me about the importance of education for my future and bc of that is the main reason I am finishing school. And I do know you were the 1 of few people that I love with all of my heart and have the utmost respect for and those close to me know that for fact. You were and will forever be my bright shining STAR. Always shining no matter what, you showed me that with every obstacle life hands us we have to find the positive and the good in all situations and be grateful for all were blessed with. I do believe there is not a soul on this earth more Caring, Loving, Generous, and Faithful then you. You were the closest man to Jesus that i will ever know. The faith you had could move mountains and I wish to be more like you. There was an aura of peace, serenity, faith and happiness in your presence. I wish I could speak to you again and tell you "i love you and God bless you too."Your last words to me were "I Love you with all my heart Sunny." You seemed to struggle to speak those words to me and I remember how it tore me up inside to see you feeling that pain and to know you would be going to the better place you're at now but those words I can still hear over and over in my head and feel your soft hands and kisses on the side of my face when you would greet me. Well Granddaddy I will end this by reminding you that I LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY HEART AND SOUL and have don't know the words to describe how much I miss you! You are now where you belong In Gods hands feeling nothing less then peace and true love. Now when I miss you at nights I will look up to the sky and find the most brightest shining star and that will remind me of YOU GRANDDADDY MY BRIGHT SHINING STAR that will forever shine so many bright rays of love and happy memories in my heart until it is my time to go and then to be with you again is what i hope and long for. XOXO Talk to you later ok Granddaddy I LOVE YOU WITH ALL OF MY HEART UNTIL IT STOPS BEATING AND EVEN FOREVER MORE AFTER THAT WHEN I AM ABLE TO BE WITH YOU AGAIN.

The tears are still too ready to fall for the loss is too great. May the lives we live and those of our children and grandchildren be a tribute to him. May we always have a spirit of joy within us, as he did, and may we share it with all we meet. His Faith shone brightly within him to the end, encouraging us to always be strong in the face of tremendous challenges and even in pain. That becomes our charge even now.
