Harriet Traylor Fields, 87, of Petersburg, widow of Charles D. Mayes Jr., passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2013. Born in McKenney, she was the daughter of the late William Bernard and Mary Ann Williams Traylor. In addition, she was preceded in death by: five brothers, Charles Fitzhugh Lee Traylor, John Mark Traylor, Zane Grey Traylor, William Bernard Traylor Jr., and Richard Claiborne Traylor; and a sister, Mary Traylor Wheeler.

Mrs. Fields retired from C & P Telephone Company after 30 years of service. She was a lifelong member of the C & P Pioneers and the C & P Bells, as well as a member of the C & P Bells Pioneer Clown Troupe. She was the area representative for the Communication Workers of America for 10 years and president of the Telephone Pioneers of America for six years. She was the founding Queen Mother of Harriet's Harem chapter of the Red Hat Society, established in Petersburg in 2003. She was a lifelong member of the former Memorial United Methodist Church.

She is survived by: her daughters, Judieth Mayes Richardson of Wilsons, and Linda Mayes Tipton of Emporia; grandchildren, S. Lee Richardson Jr. and wife, Michelle of Church Road, Aaron Mayes Richardson of Richmond, and Sarah Tipton Gaskill and husband, James of Garner, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Lindsay Grace Richardson, Tristan Beau Richardson, and Samantha Richardson; special niece, Donna M. Grabb; and special cousins, Sandra Daniels Harrison and Mildred P. Wright.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2013, at the Petersburg Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service, with the Rev. Gene C. Tatum, officiating.

Interment will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
