Herbert James Obituary

Herbert Lee James Sr., 94, 12502 James River Drive, Hopewell, slipped away to be with his heavenly father on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at the John Randolph Medical Center, Hopewell.

Mr. James was a native of Prince George County and was preceded in death by his parents, the late Andrew and Gertrude James; a son, Dexter James; and 11 siblings. He retired from Continental Can Plant, currently known as Smurfit-Stone Container Corp., after 35 years of service. After his retirement he worked many years as the proprietor of his firewood business which he enjoyed tremendously until health began to fail.

At an early age, Mr. James joined the Harrison Grove Baptist Church and later became a member of Glory Multicultural Ministries (formerly known as Praise Center Mission) where his son, Bishop Haywood James Sr. is the pastor.

Although Mr. James was blind, that did not stop him from praising the Lord and giving Him glory for all his many blessings.

He leaves to cherish his memories, the love of his life and devoted wife of 72 years, his "sweetheart" Mrs. Edith Washington James. His children, Oliver James Sr. (Naomi), the Rev. Linwood James (Mildred), Herbert James Jr. (Patricia), Calvin James (Dorothy), Bishop Haywood James Sr. (Pastor Martha), Alonzo James Sr., and Robin James, Sr.(Yanina), and one devoted daughter, Regina Myrick, (Quintin Sr.) ; one goddaughter, Francis Stanislas. Three brothers, Thomas James Sr. (Mary), Andrew James, and Lawrence James Sr. (Hilda); two sisters, Addie Burton, and Ida Mae Hall; 30 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held noon, Monday, Oct. 25, at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where the Rev. F. Lamont Gooding is pastor; the Rev. Linwood James, pastor of the Galilee Baptist Church, officiating; Bishop Haywood James Sr., pastor of the Glory Multicultural Ministries, eulogizing. The interment will be in the Merchant Hope Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Turner-Bland Funeral Home, Hopewell; the Rev. W. Nelson Bland Jr., funeral director. www.blandenterprisesinc.com

To the Family,

My heart was sadden when I heard Uncle Camp had passed away. GOD blessed Uncle Herbert with longevity. To have lived to be 94 was definitely a gift from GOD. I will miss Uncle Herbert, however, he has gone home to be with the LORD.To be absent from the body is to be present with the LORD. May the Love of GOD comfort the family.
