Horace Dickerson Obituary

Horace Dickerson, 61, (Dick), 509 N. Azalea Road, Petersburg, departed this life Dec. 18, 2009, at his resident. He was a native and lifelong resident of Petersburg and a graduate of Peabody High School Class of 1966. He was also a graduate of Virginia State University Class of 1981. Dick was a Police Officer with the Petersburg Police Department having worked in investigations as a detective. After leaving the police department he worked with the Virginia Department of Transportation as Supervisor of Investigations (Anti Trust Enforcement/Bid Rigging) retiring with 34 years of service. He was preceded in death by his father, Alexander P. Dickerson. Horace confessed Christ and was baptized at Bethesda Bibleway Church on Harding Street under the pastorate of Bishop J.S. Beane. He later worshiped with his mother, Mother Laura Dickerson at J.S. Beane Memorial Church.

Besides his mother, Mrs. Laura Dickerson; he is survived by a son, Stuart K. Jefferson; daughter-in-law Tasha Brown-Jefferson; a sister, Wanda D. Carter, all of Ettrick; a close and devoted aunt, Mrs. Belle G. Williams of Dinwiddie; three grandchildren, Stuart K. Jefferson Jr., Lauren Brooks and Jasmine N. Harris; several cousins, among them a devoted cousin. Elder James "Jimmy" Williams, other relatives and many friends, among them Chuckie Epps and Glenda Johnson.

A funeral service will be at noon Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, from the Greater Bethesda Bibleway Church, Bishop Willie Balthrop, pastor. Interment will be in Dinwiddie Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the residence of his mother, 20201 Sheffield Place, Ettrick, phone 520-1955 and at the funeral home from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 25, 2009. I met Horace through amateur radio and although I really never got to know him, I was looking forward to our annual breakfast in February in order to do so.

Please accept my condolences at this time of your loss. I have had the priveledge of meeting Horace and working with him at VDOT. Horace was loving and kind and I really enjoyed meeting him when I first came to VDOT, he was very kind to me, and was also well liked. He then retired from VDOT and I have not spoken to him since, but he was always appreciated for his kindness. My thoughts and prayers do go out to you all, may you find comfort in the time of your need .
