Hubert Pope Obituary

Retired Sgt. 1st Class Hubert Pope Jr., "Mann," of 2335 Anderson St., Petersburg, Va., departed this life on Jan. 4, 2011, at his residence, Petersburg, Va.

He was born on Aug. 22, 1942, in Enfield, N.C., to the late Mary Olivia Pope, "Sis," Wakefield, Va., and the late Hubert Pope Sr., Hopewell, Va. He was a member of Pocahontas Temple Baptist Church in Wakefield, Va. He retired from the United States Army with 20 years service with an honorable discharge. He was a member of Prince Hall Mason Military Lodge #140 F & M, VFW120 Prince George and American Legion Post 120, Disputanta. He was employed by Virginia State University, Battlefield Nursing Home and Richmond Penitentiary. He was preceded in death by one brother, Anthony Pope, "Tony," of Aberdeen, Wash.

He leaves to treasure his memory one daughter, Andrea Yevette Pope and Chris Bibbins of Nanuet, N.Y.; one grandson, Jemal Mosley Jr.; one brother, Curtis Pope of Wakefield, Va.; one sister, Diann O. (Herman) Delk of Prince George, Va.; one stepbrother, Benjamin (Doris) Seward of Waverly, Va.; one godsister, Christine Taylor, "Cat," of Prince George, Va.; one uncle, Donald Lewis (Verna) Hill, "Love," of Wakefield, Va.; a devoted fiancée, Catherine Alston, "Cat," of Chester, Va.; godparents, Jim (Margie) Davis of Wakefield, Va., one godson, Jody Holloway of Petersburg, Va.; devoted nieces and nephews, Lee (Deatrice) Delk of Petersburg, Va., Titus (Glenice) Felts of Waverly, Va., T.J. Hilliard of Ivor, Va., Anthony (Kimbie) Pope Jr. of Canada, Jacob Pope of Washington state, Tracy Coleman of Richmond, Va., Keisha Pope of Washington state, Pamela Johnson of Waverly, Va., Carla Turner of Zuni, Va., Cookie Gray of Winston-Salem N.C., Tammy Boone of Prince George, Va., Shawn Crocker, Durham, N.C., and Baby-Girl Gibbs of Wakefield, Va.; great-nephews and nieces, Koran and Jasmine Lackey of Prince George Va., Zev-Zev Delk of Petersburg, Va., Key and Jr. Felts of Waverly, Va., Dee Felts of Richmond, Va.; a devoted best friend, Johnny Holloway, Jr. of Petersburg, Va.; devoted family of his fiancée (children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren) Phillis Blair, Sonya Blair, Donna Alston, Tracey Alston and Brae Alston.

Funeral service for Mr. Hubert Pope Jr., "Mann," will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011, at Pocahontas Temple Baptist Church, 10234 Branch St., Wakefield, Va., the Rev. Lewis Allen, pastor, officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, in Alberta G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veteran Cemetery, 5310 Milner's Road, Suffolk, Va. Remains will rest at the church one hour prior to service. Viewing will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at Pocahontas Temple Baptist Church, Wakefield, Va. The family is receiving relatives and friends at the resident of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. Herman (Diann) Delk, 10800 Roland Road, Petersburg, Va. The family is asking that relatives and friends assemble at 10800 Roland Road, Petersburg, Va., at 1:30 p.m. day of service.

Ms Alston and The Pope Family: Indeed I am truly saddened to hear of the passing of Pope.I have been knowing him for a very long time.He will truly be missed by all that knew him.
