Inga Asher Obituary

Inga B. Asher, 90, of Prince George, widow of Mac M. Asher, passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, at the Hopewell Health Care Center.

Mrs. Asher, a breast cancer survivor, was born on Jan. 28, 1920, in Berlin, Germany. She was a Holocaust survivor and escaped from Nazi Germany to the only open harbor, Shanghai, China, where she spent eight years during World War II. She came to the United States in 1947. She shared her story with students in middle schools and high schools when they studied the Holocaust and was once the guest speaker at James Madison University during Holocaust Remembrance Week. Her story was featured in the Richmond Times-Dispatch several years ago and is archived at the Richmond Holocaust Museum

She is survived by two daughters, Renee Jourden and her husband, Dr. Martin Jourden of Prince George and Corinne Asher and her husband, Lester Weitman of Huntington Woods, Mich.; and four grandchildren, Nicole Jourden, Sam Jourden, Michelle Weitman and Abigail Weitman.

Mrs. Asher was a member of Congregation Brith Achim in Petersburg. She requested that no formal funeral services be held. Donations may be made in her memory to the Mac and Inga Asher Memorial Fund for Holocaust Education, Henry Ford Community College, 5101 Evergreen Road, Dearborn, MI 48128.
