"For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing," II Timothy 4:6-8 (ESV).

It was early Thursday morning on Feb. 20, 2014, that our precious Lord reached down from heaven to take the hand of Mr. James Andrew Dennis, lovingly known as "Snooks."

Born March 31, 1931, son of the late Julia Fowlkes Greene, in Petersburg, "Snooks" attended Hopewell public schools until answering the call of military duty. Enlisting in the United States Marine Corps, and later the United States Navy, "Snooks" served his country honorably before returning to Virginia.

He continued his love of travel while touring the countryside through long-distance truck driving, was an avid "Coon-Can" and checkers player and loved watching his favorite show "Sanford and Son."

"Snooks" committed his life to Christ and was a very faithful and dedicated member of the Zion Baptist Church where he studied with the men's Bible class and actively led the Sunday school's devotions until his health declined.

To carry on his legacy and cherish his memory "Snooks" leaves: a loving, devoted sister and caregiver, Janette Greene; a very devoted niece, Yolanda A. Greene-Bugg (Todd) and two devoted great-nephews, David and Da'von Greene, all of Petersburg; a daughter, Patricia Taylor and her children of Petersburg; his Zionite family and a host of relatives; and friends who will miss him dearly.

We would like to extend a special thank you to Crater Hospice, his entire medical staff and the Zion Baptist Church for their continuous love and care.

Services for Mr. James A. "Snooks" Dennis will be held at 12 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, at Zion Baptist Church, 225 Byrne St., Petersburg, the Rev. Dr. Archie German, interim pastor, officiating and the Rev. Dr. Andrew J. White Sr., pastor emeritus, eulogist.

The family may be contacted by calling his sister, Janette Greene at 804-733-9043.

Family members and friends are invited to pay final tribute to Mr. Dennis at www.jmwilkersonsince1874.com.
