James Watts Chance, 83, of Baxley, Ga., departed this life on July 6, 2013, at Fairview Park Hospital, Dublin, Ga.

Mr. Chance was born Dec. 18, 1929, to the late William Henry and the late Bell Johnson Chance. He proudly served our country in the Korean Conflict in the United States Army. He was a retired machinist and worked for Reynolds Aluminum. He was a member of the American Legion and the Moose Lodge. He had lived in Appling County for 19 years.

Survivors include, his spouse, Shirley Chance of Baxley; two daughters, Sherry (Kevin) Carter and Cathy (Eddie) Carter, both of Baxley; five sons, James (Frances) Chance of Swainsboro, Ga., Henry (Sharon) Chance of Augusta, David (Gail) Chance of Buford, Ga., Terry Thomas and Eddie Carter, both of Baxley; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and four nieces/nephews. He is also survived by two special friends, Lynn Todd of K'Ville, Ga., and Gladys Carter of Baxley.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2013, in the chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Daniels officiating. Interment will be in Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glenville, Ga. Visitation will be one hour prior to funeral hour. The family will assemble at the home of Shirley Chance, 24 North Lee Street Ext. Baxley.
