He was a dedicated Christian, and an active leader at Crosslight Assembly of God in Petersburg. He obtained his bachelor of science degree from Bowling Green State University, master of science degree from Case Western Reserve University, had worked as an instructor of Operations Research at U.S. Army Logistics University, the Department of the Army at Fort Lee, as well as an adjunct faculty instructor at John Tyler Community College.
John is survived by his wife of 29 years, Cheryl; daughters, Rachel Bishop, Sarah Stearns, Rebekah and Hannah; two sons-in-law, Steven Bishop and Justin Stearns; grandchildren, Ellie Bishop and Liam Bishop; mother, Elizabeth; brother, Paul; and sisters, Anne, Eileen and Mary.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, in the Life Church, 16801 Harrowgate Road, Colonial Heights, VA 23834, with the Rev. Michael Buckley officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, in the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
