Retired U.S. Army Col. John T. Evans, 99, of Springfield, died on April 14, 2013. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Alabama, and a master's degree in Biological Engineering from NIT. He was a World War II veteran and served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers until 1971. He continued working in government positions as well as private enterprises.

He is survived by his son, John C. Evans of Springfield; daughter, Charlotte Evans Barksdale and husband, Charles R. Barksdale; granddaughters, Kathryn Elizabeth Barksdale, and Leigh Barksdale Fleshman and husband, Mark; great-grandchildren, Brendan and Emalee Ford, and Pierson Fleshman, of Prince George; a loving friend, Mrs. Edith Clarke of Arlingtona; longtime friend, Edward K. Ernstrom of Towaco, N.J.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn B. Evans; and his grandson, Reade C. Barksdale. He was a great dad and a well-loved man.
