Deacon Joseph Lawrence Salter of 20506 Hickory Court, Petersburg, Va., quietly entered into his heavenly mansion on Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at 8 a.m. at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, Va.
Deacon Salter "Joe" or "Sunny", as he was so fondly called, was born on Oct. 23, 1947, to Mr. Joe Salter Jr. and Mother Minnie Williams Salter-Merritt in Terrell County, Dawson, Ga.
Deacon Salter was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Joe Salter Jr.; grandmother, Mary L. Salter; maternal grandmother, Mary C. Williams; grandfather, Jimmy L. Williams; stepfather, Charlie Merritt; and granddaughter, Jasmine Stith. Deacon Salter accepted Christ at an early age at the Sardis Baptist Church, Dawson, Ga. He was always seeking higher goals in Christ. He as a young boy loved good old gospel music and he never liked or was satisfied with nothing less than the preached word of God and no dead church. He joined a gospel quartet group; he went place to place singing the gospel. He served in the United States Armed Forces, which carried him to many different places in the United States and overseas, he was stationed in Korea and he served in Vietnam. He received several awards, medals and honors during his tours in the military. He was an employee at the Defense Supply Center, Richmond, Va.
Deacon Salter connected with Faith and Hope Temple COGIC, and his whole life became new. Faith and Hope Temple was his heart as well as the saints, he was faithful up until his health failed him. He loved his Male Chorus. Deacon Salter was loved by all he met.
He leaves to cherish his memories a devoted and loving wife, Mrs. Doris A. Stith-Salter; and daughters, Tamara Stith of Petersburg, Va., Donita Williams (Herbert) of Hopewell, Va., Sabrina Stith-Randolph (Richard) of Petersburg, Va., and Shawna Stith of Petersburg, Va.; grandchildren, Deverrick and Tre'Shawn Harris, both of Honolulu, Hawaii, Ahbri Womble, Ariel Stith, Torey Olds Jr., TyAsia Olds, Jada Wiggins, all of Petersburg, Va., Tywon Smith of Surry County, Va., Kierra Cooper and Kiceyonna Williams, both of Hopewell, Va., and Daniel Williams of Colonial Heights, Va.
