Joseph Thomas Elder Jr., 86, of Colonial Heights, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at his residence. He was born July 15, 1927, in Petersburg, to the late Joseph Thomas Elder Sr., and Mae Jessup Elder-Jennings; and was preceded in death by: two brothers, Gene Elder and Douglas "Ducky" Elder; and a grandson, Michael G. Elder Jr.

Mr. Elder was a World War II, Navy veteran, and retired from the A & P Tea Company. He was a member of West End Baptist Church, and the Dixie Bowman Archery Club. He loved tending to his yard and garden.
Mr. Elder is survived by: his wife of 65 years, Edith O. Elder; daughter, Jo Ann E. Mimms and husband Pace of Manteo, N.C.; son, Michael Gene Elder and wife Rudy of Hopewell; six grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren; sister, Helen Mattia of Colonial Heights; and numerous nieces; and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, in Southlawn Memorial Park Prince George, with the Rev. Rodney Mason of Faith Tabernacle Assembly of God Church officiating. The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
