LAURA MATTHEWS Obituary
God in his infinite wisdom touched and called home Ms. Laura Rebecca Matthews, 93, of 1315 Hinton St., Petersburg, VA. Laura was born Nov. 6, 1924, in Dinwiddie County. She entered into eternal rest unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at Southside Regional Medical Center Petersburg, Virginia. Laura was the daughter of Annie Mae Bolling Matthews Hudson and James Arthur Matthews. Richard Hudson was her devoted stepfather. She gave her life to Christ in the late nineteen thirties at Olive Branch Baptist Church, the home church of her deceased father, James Matthews.

In 1948 Laura, along with her first cousin, Diahana Bolling, left Dinwiddie at the age of twenty-four and relocated to the City of New York. For fifty years, she worked midnight's cleaning office buildings. In addition to her evening job, Laura worked for many years as a domestic worker for some very prominent New York families. One family in particular were the original owners of "America's Team" the Dallas Cowboys. Another family she worked for owned and operated many New York Broadway Theaters and movie complexes. While in New York, Laura became a member of Greater File Chapel Baptist Church in Harlem. After retiring, she returned home to be closer to family.

She was a true Matriarch and loved her family. Her family was beneficiaries of her love throughout the decades. Her memory will forever be cherished by her daughter, Annie Hill (Jarvis Sr.); two grandchildren, Tameka H. Navarro (Al), Jarvis Hill, Jr.; and four great-grandchildren, Jayce Smith, Kamari, Mi'Angel and Michael; two surviving brothers; Joseph Matthews, John Matthews; and one sister, Mary Lee Jones; sister-in-law, Lydia Matthews; and very devoted cousins, Lucy Ann Tucker and Rose Zuhuri; and a host of devoted nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be conducted 2pm Saturday, June 16, 2018, at Olive Branch Baptist Church, 11119 Boydton Plank Road, Dinwiddie, Rev. Kevin M. Northam, eulogist. Interment to follow in the Eleven Oaks Baptist Church, Dewitt, VA. Public viewing will be from 10am to 8pm Friday, June 15, 2018. Funeral services have been entrusted to the professional staff of the Petersburg Chapel-Joseph M. Johnson & Son Funeral Home, 530 S. Sycamore St., Petersburg. (804) 863-4411.
