Mr. Lawrence A. Smith of Petersburg, passed away, Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, at the age of 75, after a lengthy illness.

He was a native of Dinwiddie County, and was the son of Charlie and Estelle Smith. He was preceded in death by: his two sons, Lawrence and Victor; his parents; four brothers; and one sister.

He attended Dinwiddie County Public Schools and joined the Olive Branch Baptist Church at an early age. He was employed at Southern Brick & Block (Paracrete) for 28 years until he retired.

Lawrence was a devoted son, father, brother and friend. His favorite hobbies were playing bingo, cooking, hunting and working in his garden. He was known for sharing the vegetables he grew.

Left to cherish fond memories are: three children, Stephanie and Barry Smith of Matoaca, and Patricia Gordon (Lawrence) of Prince George; five grandchildren; a loving and devoted companion, Mary Winfield; and three loving stepchildren, Sherita, Natasha and Milton Winfield. Also surviving: five brothers, Franklin R. Smith (Dorothy) of Petersburg, Hugh L. Smith of Detroit, Mich., Henry, Thomas (Sue) and George A. Smith (Brenda), all of Dinwiddie; three sisters, Jean Perkins, Lillian Crawley, and Lucille Blackwell (Howard) all of Dinwiddie; one sister-in-law, Marian Smith of Petersburg, and a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; and friends.

A funeral service for Mr. Lawrence A. Smith will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at the Chapel of J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment Inc., 102 South Ave., Petersburg, the Rev. Kevin Northam, pastor of Olive Branch Baptist Church, eulogist. The interment will follow at the Smith Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at the funeral establishment.

The family, honorary, and active pallbearers are asked to assemble at 3:30 p.m. at the funeral establishment. The family will also receive friends at 2 Maria Court, Apartment 2, Petersburg.
