Lillian Stallings Rayner, born Feb. 28, 1921, 92, the matriarch of the Stallings family passed on Thursday, May 2, 2013, in Gambrills, Md.

Born in Grand Rapids, N.C., her mother Sally and father John moved to Hopewell, which became the family seat for the decades following.
Wife of the late Larry C. Rayner; mother to her surviving son, Larry Jr.; grandmother to Lisa Roca, and Lara Rayner; great-grandmother to Nathan Charles Roca.
Lil, as she was known to all, was a graduate of Hopewell High, president of the home economics club. During the war, she began a career at the Allied Chemical plant, then moved into the purchasing office where she worked as a managing secretary for the next 35 years.
After retirement, she and her husband enjoyed entertaining family and friends at their beach cottage in Claremont.
Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 17, 2013, at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home and Cremation Service. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2013, at the funeral home with interment to follow in Appomattox Cemetery.
