As God would have it in his infinite wisdom called our angel to her heavenly resting place,

Mrs. Lucille C. Gresham Johnson, 91, of Petersburg, Va., departed this life on Wednesday, June 11, 2014. Lucille was born Aug. 27, 1922, in Dinwiddie County, Va., to the late Mamie C.W. Gresham-Buggs and Berthea Claiborne Gresham.

Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, James Benjamin Johnson; one daughter, Shirley Virginia Johnson; three grandchildren, Quincy D. Johnson, Tyrone M. Johnson Sr. and Quincy D. Mayfield; two sisters, Hattie L. Jones and Mattie Humphrey; six brothers, Patrick Henry Gresham, Theo-Willard "Big Bill" Gresham, Claiborne Griffin, John Gresham, William Lawson Gresham and Walton Gresham; a devoted friend and companion, Columbus Ebry; and a daughter-in-law, Delores Johnson.

She was a member of St. Peter's Baptist Church, Sutherland, Va. Upon moving to Prince George, Va., she became a member of Little Mount Baptist, Sussex County, Va. In her latter years she became a member First Baptist Church, Petersburg, Va. She was an employee of Virginia State College (University) in Ettrick, Va., and Continental Can factory, Hopewell, Va.

Lucille leaves to cherish her everlasting memories, three sons, James Johnson Sr. (Mildred) devoted, William Johnson Sr. and Wilbert Johnson Sr., all of Petersburg, Va.; two daughters, Thelma L. Johnson and Mary A. Manson; adopted grandchildren, Shirley Vanessa Johnson, and Chanel "Peaches" Johnson and family, whom she raised as her own; 13 grandchildren, James Johnson Jr., Christopher Johnson, William Johnson Jr., Dexter Johnson, Delphine Johnson, Lucolia Mayfield, Tosha Young, Wilbert Johnson Jr., Jacqueline Johnson, Mary J. Ruffin, Roslyn McCombes, Due'Shone E. Walker and Janel Thomas (Johnny); 33 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren, among them one devoted, V'tessa Johnson; one great-great-great grandson wh was the apple of her eye, Eliyjah Johnson; one sister, Matilda Gresham of Baltimore; one sister-in-law, Gracie Griffin; five nephews, Warren Griffin, Donald Griffin (Tammy) devoted, Michael Griffin (Lani), Paul Jones and Darnell Humphrey, all of Petersburg, Va.; four nieces, Beatrice Frazier, Barbara Griffin, Charlotte Griffin and Paulette Jones, all of Petersburg, Va.; and a host of other relatives and friends too numerous to name.

As well as being cared for by all of her children, we would also like to give thanks to the staff of Jen-Care, Hospice, Southside Regional Medical Center At Home Care, Family Links, Hopewell Medical Center, Public Partnership, Assisted Home Care and the HealthSouth Rehabilitation Center.

A celebration of life for Mrs. Lucille C. Johnson will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2014, at First Baptist Church, 236 Harrison St., Petersburg, Va.; the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Tillman, pastor, eulogist. Interment will be held at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at the funeral establishment.
